Terry Landon Stidham, originally from Hamilton, Alabama, now inspires others in Florence through his work in community sports and faith-oriented initiatives. Raised by a pastor father and a nurse mother, with a brother who teaches special education, Terry grew up surrounded by role models who instilled in him the values of service and compassion. This foundation encouraged him to pursue a path of community leadership and personal growth.

After graduating from Hamilton High School in 2017, Terry Landon Stidham honed his leadership skills at the Ramp School of Ministry, earning his degree in 2021. He continued his education at the University of North Alabama, completing his undergraduate degree in 2024, and he is currently furthering his education in a master’s program. In his role as an Intramural Official at the university, Terry combines his love for sports with his zeal for engaging the community.

Terry’s journey is one of resilience, having navigated through both a challenging knee injury during his senior year of high school and subsequent legal issues, which were resolved and expunged, reinforcing his faith and tenacity. As a devoted member of Underwood Baptist Church and the Baptist Campus Ministries, Terry lives his faith actively, believing true success is measured by the difference he makes in the lives of others.

How did your passion for basketball begin, and how has it influenced your role at the University of North Alabama?

My passion for basketball started in my backyard, where I spent countless hours practicing shots and dribbling. Basketball has taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and resilience, which I carry over into my role at UNA. As an Intramural Official, I try to impart these values to the students, encouraging them not just to compete but to grow as team players and individuals.

What have been some of the most memorable moments from your time in the Ramp School of Ministry?

The Ramp School of Ministry was a transformative experience for me. One of the most memorable moments was a mission trip we took to a rural community, where we helped rebuild homes and led youth sports programs. It was incredibly rewarding to see how our physical and spiritual efforts brought joy and relief to the community.

What strategies do you use to manage stress and maintain mental health while juggling academics, work, and personal commitments?

Managing stress is crucial, especially with a schedule as packed as mine. I rely heavily on regular physical activity, like basketball, to clear my mind. I also maintain a daily journal and a strict schedule that includes quiet time for reflection and prayer each morning. These practices help keep me centered and mentally prepared for the day’s challenges.

How has your experience as an Intramural Official impacted your views on sportsmanship and fair play?

Working as an Intramural Official has deepened my appreciation for sportsmanship and fair play. I’ve seen how respectful competition fosters camaraderie and personal growth. It’s my job to enforce the rules, but also to model and promote a spirit of fairness and respect among players, which I believe are foundational to any sporting activity.

Can you discuss a project or initiative you are particularly proud of from your time with the Baptist Campus Ministries?

One project that stands out is the “Community Connect” initiative we started, which involves students interacting with local businesses and elderly homes to provide various services and companionship. This project not only helps the community but also gives students a sense of involvement and responsibility outside the university walls.

In what ways do you think your upbringing has shaped your career path and personal philosophies?

Growing up in a family focused on service and faith has profoundly shaped my career path and personal philosophies. My parents taught me the value of hard work and helping others, which has directed me towards a career in educational and community service. My personal philosophy revolves around serving and uplifting those around me, reflecting the teachings I received from my family.

What are some of the challenges you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing the competitiveness of intramural sports with the inclusive spirit we strive to foster. Sometimes, players get caught up in the heat of the moment. To manage this, I focus on proactive communication, setting clear expectations before games, and stepping in early when tensions rise to remind everyone of the larger goals of participation and enjoyment.

How do you envision your future in community service and ministry work evolving in the next few years?

Looking forward, I hope to expand my involvement in community service and ministry by developing programs that integrate sports, education, and faith-based mentoring. I envision creating more outreach programs that address specific community needs, potentially on a national or even international scale.

What advice would you give to students and young professionals who look up to you and want to follow a similar path?

For anyone looking to follow a similar path, my advice would be to stay grounded in your values and stay committed to your goals, even when obstacles arise. Seek out mentors and be open to learning from others, but also trust in your own abilities and the direction you feel called towards. And never underestimate the power of persistence and faith.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in both your professional life and your personal faith journey?

My motivation comes from a deep-seated belief that I am doing what I was called to do—serve others through my actions and faith. I stay inspired by regularly engaging in community service and by the personal stories of those I help, which remind me of the tangible impact of my work. In my personal faith journey, I draw strength from scripture, prayer, and the support of my church community, which renew my spirit and focus my efforts.
