Richard Yu is a high-performance coach and founder of The High Performance Training company and Influencer Programme. Yu helps his clients build their companies, improve brand recognition and increase their return on investment. He focuses on providing individual attention, training, and assisting others in attaining financial security.
Richard found his entrepreneurial calling during studying pre-med at UCLA. While volunteering at different medical institutes he realized that his heart was set on helping people in a different way. Yu started to work for an online fitness coach, Vince Del Monte, as an intern, and less than a year later he was promoted to Chief Operations Officer in his Senior year at UCLA.
As a philanthropist, Yu began Generosity Designs, a jewelry company offering custom pieces and the customer choosing which organization to donate 25% of the price. In 2018, Generosity Cash was launched as the only ATM distribution company in the U.S. to donate its surcharge fees to charitable organizations. The High Performance Training company was launched in 2019 followed by its Influencer Program in 2020.
How did you get started in this business?
I started my company because I noticed that there was a need for people seeking financial security but unsure of how to attain it. This means whether the person already had a business or was wanting to start a business, they just didn’t know how to invest with a great ROI.
How do you make money?
My company makes money by selling individualized training programs to customers. These customers can be anyone from established corporations to individuals just starting out.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
I made my first $500,000 within eight months of launching The High Performance Training Company. It happened organically via social media platforms.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
I think anyone can be faced with doubt. But this is where my training comes in handy. It’s turning that doubt to profit that counts.
How did you get your first customer?
I was contacted on social media after I posted a video explaining how I can help them be more productive in a few short steps.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
An organic social marketing strategy has always worked well for me, like posting on YouTube or Instagram.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
In business, there are always tough decisions to make. They can deal with finances, budget cuts, hiring, etc. There are no decisions that should be taken lightly. Everything you do should be done mindfully and deliberately.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
What makes me successful? My smile? I kid. I think that what makes me successful is not only training my clients but also learning from them. No one becomes successful without making mistakes, learning from said mistakes, and listening to your clients’ needs.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
My most satisfying moment in business had to be, not when I made my first $500,000 but when my client made their first $500,000 a mere months after training with me.
What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?
I truly hope that the future will bring my business even more success to my clients. I am always excited to see my clients get a return on their investment.
What business books have inspired you?
A book that has inspired me, especially in this line of work is “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. That book changed my life because it taught me to truly understand the other person’s perspective and to make sure they’re taken care of.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
The advice I would give to my younger self would be to not waste time in medical school, because there is a more vital and current calling.
