I started my journey in the field of municipal services and social housing shortly after completing my degree in Business Management/Administration. As a professional in municipal services and social housing, my primary focus is on serving the needs of vulnerable populations and addressing homelessness in Ontario. While my work is primarily driven by a commitment to public service and community development, I also earn a salary through my employment with organizations such as Toronto Community Housing.

How long did it take for you to become profitable?

In the realm of public service, profitability is not measured in traditional financial terms. Rather, the success of my work is evaluated based on its impact on individuals and communities. It took years of dedication, hard work, and collaboration to achieve meaningful outcomes in addressing homelessness and social housing issues.

When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work?

Like any journey, there were certainly moments of doubt and uncertainty along the way. Addressing complex social issues such as homelessness requires persistence, resilience, and a willingness to confront challenges head-on. However, my passion for making a difference and the support of colleagues and mentors helped me overcome any doubts and stay focused on my goals.

How did you get your first customer?

In the realm of public service, the concept of “customers” is somewhat different from traditional business models. My “first customers” were the individuals and families in need of housing and support services. My role was to advocate for their rights, address their needs, and work towards solutions that would improve their quality of life.

What is one marketing strategy that works well to generate new business?

In public service, building strong relationships and partnerships is essential for generating support and fostering collaboration. Networking with stakeholders, engaging with community organizations, and leveraging media opportunities are effective strategies for raising awareness and garnering support for initiatives aimed at addressing social issues.

What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?

As a leader in municipal services, I often face difficult decisions that impact individuals and communities. One tough decision in recent months involved allocating limited resources to prioritize certain programs and services over others. Balancing competing needs and priorities requires careful consideration and a commitment to maximizing the impact of available resources.

What do you think makes you successful?

I believe that my success stems from a combination of passion, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others. My ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, stakeholders, and community members has also been instrumental in achieving meaningful outcomes in my field.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

One of the most satisfying moments in my career was witnessing the positive impact of initiatives aimed at addressing homelessness and social housing issues. Seeing individuals and families find stable housing, access support services, and rebuild their lives has been incredibly rewarding and reaffirms my commitment to public service.

Heifetz and Marty Linsky and “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” by Matthew Desmond have informed my approach to leadership and advocacy.
