Pia Theissen is a modeling powerhouse that has rocked the fashion industry in the few weeks she’s been on the scene. In only four weeks after moving to Medellín, Colombia, Pia deservingly got signed to one of Colombia’s top modeling agencies, Iconic Models. The future is limitless for the young German, who fortunately for the world, just discovered her potential earlier this year.
Pia’s dreams and aspirations of becoming an international model have been shot down and dismissed for most of her life by the ones she confided in, and sadly she believed them. Pia selflessly led a life of service, working as an occupational therapist for children as well as a personal trainer, always putting others needs and wants before herself. In need of reflection and personal time, Pia booked a flight to Ibiza to get away – a flight that would forever change her life.
It was in Ibiza that Pia met all the right people to help her believe in herself and pursue her dreams. Since then, she’s been on the go and making major waves in the industry.
How did you get started in this business?
I’d always wanted to be a model but never really had the self-confidence to pursue it. It wasn’t until this year while I was vacationing in Ibiza that I met someone who inspired me to pursue my dreams.
It was always a dream of mine to model in Medellín, Colombia and so I finally put a plan together to make that dream reality and it worked. In only four weeks of being there I had met with my top three modeling agency choices and signed with the one I felt was mutually the best fit.
How do you make money?
Most of my revenue comes from photoshoots. My agency finds me brands and businesses that need models for advertising and marketing.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
I can honestly say it has taken years. In that time, I had to learn everything I could on how to model, practice, and most importantly learn to believe in myself enough to leave my old life behind and pursue this full time. It wasn’t until recently that I was finally able to get jobs through my agency and really start making money.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
Absolutely. It seemed that every time I told my friends and family that I wanted to be a model they’d just tell me all the reasons they believed why I should never pursue it. They said it was unrealistic, that I wasn’t tall or skinny enough, and that I just didn’t have what it took and because I didn’t have a lot of self-confidence, I believed them.
After years of working on myself, building my confidence, and meeting the right people, I’ve finally been able to overcome self-doubt and do what I’ve always dreamed of doing – no longer influenced by those who don’t want to see me win.
How did you get your first customer?
Through my agency. Once I was signed, they put my profile into their network and brands began contacting them with jobs shortly after.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
Having a solid modeling agency that identifies jobs that are on brand with me. This allows me to really focus on my craft rather than spend that time searching for work.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
Telling my family, friends, and employer I was leaving my life in Germany to pursue my dreams of becoming a model in just two short weeks. I faced a lot of resistance, but I’m glad I followed through as this decision has already significantly changed my life for the better.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
Discipline. When I really want something, I don’t stop working until I get it. I’m also very reflective of everything that happens. It’s better to just be brave and do things and learn from the mistakes than to overthink yourself out of everything. Everything is a lesson.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
When I officially signed into my top choice for a modeling agency and heard that they already had clients wanting to work with me. That moment showed me the value of all my hard work.
What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?
I’m most excited to do shoots and brand work with big name companies, but I don’t like to put a lot of pressure on myself regarding the future. I love being inspired in the moment and just going wherever life takes me. That’s what excites me.
What business books have inspired you?
Dare to Lead – Rene Brown
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Believe in yourself and do whatever it is you’re passionate about. Stop believing everything people say. Only you are responsible for your life and what you can accomplish.
Are you willing to be a mentor? If so, how should someone contact you?
Yes. Interested people should contact me at PiaTheissen118@gmail.com
