To start, can you tell us what inspired you to enter the floral industry?

My journey into the floral industry began when I worked in various flower shops for about five years. During that time, I was deeply inspired by the beauty of flowers and the joy they bring to people. Additionally, I followed many young entrepreneurs on Instagram who were making waves in their respective fields, and their stories motivated me to pursue my own business in floristry.

The floriculture industry is evolving rapidly. What trends have you observed recently?

One of the most significant trends is the push towards sustainability and eco-friendly practices. Consumers are increasingly demanding products that are ethically sourced and environmentally responsible. This includes using biodegradable materials, recycling, and sourcing flowers locally to reduce our carbon footprint. It’s an exciting time as the industry shifts towards greener practices.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact your business, and what changes did you implement to adapt?

The pandemic was challenging for many in our industry, including myself. There were significant disruptions, especially in the events and hospitality segments. However, there was a renewed interest in home decor and personal well-being, which boosted retail floristry sales. We adapted by enhancing our online presence and offering home delivery services, which helped us reach more customers and stay connected during tough times.

The International Floriculture Trade Fair (IFTF) is a major event in the industry. How important is it for your business to participate in such events?

The IFTF is incredibly important for us. It offers a platform to network with other industry professionals, showcase our products, and explore the latest trends and innovations. Participating in these events helps us stay updated and competitive. It’s also a great opportunity to build relationships with potential customers and partners from around the world.

Can you talk about the current trends in floral design that you’re most excited about?

Absolutely! Right now, minimalism and natural aesthetics are very popular. There’s a strong cultural shift towards simplicity and nature-inspired themes. We’re seeing innovative uses of materials, including upcycled and transparent structures, which blend modernity with traditional beauty. These trends are allowing us to create striking and unique floral arrangements that resonate with a wide audience.

How do you incorporate sustainability into your business practices?

We prioritize sourcing flowers locally to reduce our carbon footprint and use biodegradable materials whenever possible. Additionally, we recycle and repurpose materials in our shop. We’re also exploring the integration of green technologies, such as plasma-activated water and digital pest scouting, to enhance our sustainability efforts.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in floriculture. How are you leveraging technological advancements in your business?

Technology is a game-changer for us. We’re utilizing digital tools for pest scouting, which helps us maintain healthy plants more efficiently. We’re also looking into plasma-activated water, which can improve plant health and reduce the need for chemical treatments. These advancements not only boost our efficiency but also support our sustainability goals.

What challenges did you face as a first-generation entrepreneur, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was navigating the business landscape without familial or communal business experience. I had to learn a lot on my own, which involved making mistakes and learning from them. Securing a business loan was also a hurdle, but my passion and dedication helped me persevere. I focused on continuous learning and drew inspiration from successful entrepreneurs, which kept me motivated.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for your business in the next few years?

My primary goal is to continue growing the business while maintaining our commitment to sustainability. I want to expand our product range and explore new markets. Additionally, I’m interested in further integrating technology to enhance our operations and reduce our environmental impact. Ultimately, I aim to inspire other aspiring entrepreneurs and contribute positively to the community.

Finally, what advice would you give to someone looking to start their own business in the floriculture industry?

My advice would be to stay passionate and dedicated. The floral industry can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Learn as much as you can from every available source, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important, so incorporate eco-friendly practices from the start. Most importantly, stay true to your vision and never give up on your dreams.
