Recently The Gaurav Srivastava and Sharon Srivastava hosted the Global Security Forum, what were key areas that were focused on?
I was honored to host the Global Security forum and have the opportunity to address the importance of fixing our food system. It’s not just about ensuring everyone has enough to eat, but it’s also about creating a sustainable and equitable system. One of the key points of this forum was the need for diversification and better value chains in the agriculture and food industry. It’s no longer just about economic efficiency, it’s about creating a diverse and well-connected system that benefits everyone. This means rethinking where we grow staple crops and finding new sources for imports. And it’s not just about improving the overall economy, but it’s also about making sure our communities have access to nutritious food. The emphasis on country-led and locally-owned approaches is important because it ensures that actions are tailored to local realities and needs. We need to make sure that marginalized groups, such as women and indigenous peoples, have a voice in these decisions. Ultimately, we need to work together to create a system that benefits us all.
Did you have any special guests speak at this event?
Christopher MacLennan, the Deputy Minister of International Development and Personal Representative of the Prime Minister of Canada, delivered an inspirational speech on the importance of helping impoverished farmers and building resilience in food systems. He emphasized the need to use risk-sharing tools such as credit and crop insurance to assist marginalized farmers during times of crisis. However, the most critical aspect of his message was the need for gender-transformative approaches to build a more equitable global community. Women and girls suffer disproportionately from food insecurity and malnutrition, and yet they also play a vital role in food production and consumption. Canada recognizes the power of women as agents of change and sees a bright future where women contribute to climate-smart agriculture and improved access to nutritious food.
What is The Gaurav Srivastava and Sharon Srivastava motivation in hosting these type of events?
As a member of society, it’s hard to overlook the staggering statistics surrounding global hunger and food insecurity. Learning about statistics such as the International Food Policy Research Institute’s estimate of 828 million people facing hunger in 2021, it is heartbreaking. It’s difficult to imagine the pain and suffering that comes with not having access to basic essentials like food and energy – things that most of us take for granted. That’s why I was motivated to start the Gaurav & Sharon Srivastava Family Foundation. Our foundation’s forward-thinking approach to tackling this issue head-on is exactly what we need. With a focus on understanding the food-energy connection, their work brings awareness and encourages conversations on the matter. I truly believe that everyone should have equal access to these fundamental resources, and I’m motivated for my organization to fight for this cause.
