Dylan Roberts is the founder of CuberPi, a South Bend Indiana company that makes 3D printers. He has years of experience in engineering and mechatronics. Dylan was born in London but moved to the US where he settled down in South Bend. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. After working at an engineering firm for a few years, Dylan decided to start his own company. He has always been interested in 3D printing and saw it as the future of manufacturing. CuberPi started out as a small startup, but it has since grown exponentially thanks to Dylan’s hard work and perseverance.

He has completed many marathons across the country and enjoys hiking whenever he can.

How did you get started in this business?

I started my business out of a passion for fixing things and figuring out how they work. I settled into engineering, but after years working with some great tech institutions on their front lines in solving hard problems; it felt like the right time to go off on one’s own.

How do you make money?

I make money by designing and selling 3D printers. I also offer repair services for these machines, which have been my passion from an early age. I was always building things as a kid! My clients are both companies who need to print parts on demand but don’t want the hassle of maintaining them themselves or individuals printing at home with their own machine-whether it be part replacement after accidental breakage, custom design work such as personalizing garments with logos etc., prototypes before investing in production costs among other issues.

I also offer private training sessions for those who want to become experts in the field

How long did it take for you to become profitable?

I’m really happy to say that the business became profitable within three months of being in operation. Thanks largely to my clients who were willing and patient enough with me, even when some challenges came up.

When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?

I had no doubt that it would work because I knew we were up against some powerful competition. There were numerous challenges, but my team and I faced them bravely together as if it was just another day at the office for us! However what wasn’t anticipated is how big this company has grown since then – bigger than anyone could have imagined back when things started out so simple which I’m grateful for.

Do you remember how you got your first client?

One of the first clients I had was someone who used to be a client of mine when I started my career. We lost touch over time, but somehow ran into each other at this social gathering and he commissioned me for one project! Since then we’ve stayed in contact as friends-he refers new clients my way all the time too because they are just so happy with their results from us.

What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in your professional life?

Facing the difficult decision to let some of my team go due to economic uncertainty as well as their wellbeing and safety. They were efficient and skilled workers who helped me get the company where it is now.  As the situation improves, I’m looking forward to having them back on board.

What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?

My main strategy is Search engine marketing which is a powerful and effective way for me to market my business. It has generated tons of new customers, increased traffic on my website, and helped people find what they’re looking for quickly by providing them with relevant searches.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would advise my younger self to have more faith in himself and his abilities

I am not sure if this is something one can learn or teach but I think it’s important. Even though we are all products of our environment and experiences, at some point you need to realize who truly matters: myself.  I would also advise myself to enjoy the process as it’s a journey, not a destination.

What do you think it is that makes you successful?

I credit my success to a combination of factors, including the hard work and determination I bring with me into every project. But it’s also thanks in part to my teamI and I’m grateful to them for all of the hard-work; patience ;and elbow grease they put in. They make everything possible for us–from their expertise on how best to create quality products to ensuring customer satisfaction.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

My most satisfying moment in business is watching the satisfaction on each of my clients’ faces when they receive and use my 3D printers successfully. That feeling never gets old

What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?

With our increased demand for products, I’m excited that we have the opportunity to be creative and expand operations. As is company policy, all proceeds aim at making a positive impact in society–we’re looking forward to participating more on charitable or social projects!

What business books have inspired you?

It is not easy to change your habits. It takes time and dedication, but the rewards are worth it! I like James Clear’s Atomic Habits because he gives practical advice on how anyone can build good routines that will lead them towards success in any area of their lives–whether it be fitness or finance for instance (or both).

Another book that has inspired me is Outliers: The Story Of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s an exploration into what it takes to become successful and how some people are born with a knack for greatness, while others have more work ahead if they want their name added onto this list someday! Reading about these outliers in history as well as modern day heroes gave me hope because I realized there was always someone else out there who could do something amazing. Even after failing on previous attempts, with determination anything is possible.

I love being able to help others from all walks of life grow in their chosen field if they need some guidance on what path might work best. I’m always looking for new ideas and thoughts and would love to share with the industry.
