The company provided over 800,000 hours of tutoring services, created more than 2,000 jobs, and earned several prestigious accolades, including being named an Inc. 500 company and the 5th fastest-growing educational company in America.
In a remarkable turn of events, Carl, after selling Group Excellence in 2011, reclaimed it a few years later for just 10% of the original sales price. His entrepreneurial journey took another significant leap in 2016 when he led GEX Management in making its initial public offering, becoming the youngest African American to take a company public in the United States.
Under Carl’s leadership, GEX Management experienced an exponential revenue surge, from $500,000 in 2016 to over $8 million in 2017, earning recognition as the fastest-growing public company in North Texas by The Dallas Morning News.

How did you get started in this business?
My journey in the business world began during my college days at Southern Methodist University (SMU). It was there that I founded my first venture, Group Excellence, which started as a humble dorm room idea. With a strong belief in the power of education and a mission to make a positive impact, I transformed that initial concept into a thriving tutoring company. My background in triple majors – Public Policy, Economics, and Psychology – gave me a solid foundation in understanding market dynamics and human behavior, which proved invaluable as I navigated the entrepreneurial landscape.
How do you make money?
I generate revenue primarily through my various business ventures. Whether it’s through providing tutoring services, managing educational companies, or investing in startups, the common thread is that these endeavors are driven by a combination of passion and a keen understanding of market needs. Diversification across multiple ventures has been a key strategy to create sustainable income streams and minimize risk.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
In the early stages of entrepreneurship, profitability often takes time to materialize. It wasn’t an overnight success for me. Group Excellence, my first venture, took several years of hard work and perseverance before it became profitable. Building a strong foundation and a reputation for excellence in the tutoring industry required time and dedication. Patience and a focus on long-term goals were crucial during this period.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
Certainly, there were moments of doubt in the early days of entrepreneurship. Building a business from scratch is fraught with challenges, and there were times when I questioned whether it would work out. However, these doubts served as motivators rather than deterrents. I tackled them by staying focused on my vision, seeking advice from mentors and peers, and continuously adapting and refining my strategies based on the feedback and lessons learned along the way.
How did you get your first customer?
Getting the first customer is often one of the most challenging steps for any entrepreneur. For me, it involved a combination of networking, attending industry events, and leveraging personal connections. It was about getting the word out about our tutoring services and demonstrating the value we could provide. Over time, word-of-mouth referrals and positive reviews from satisfied customers played a significant role in acquiring new clients.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
One marketing strategy that has proven effective is content marketing. Creating valuable, educational content that addresses the pain points and needs of our target audience has helped establish authority and trust in our field. Whether through blog posts, webinars, or informative videos, this approach not only attracts potential customers but also positions our businesses as valuable resources in the industry.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
