Anthony Helton graduated from Greater Beckly Christian School, where he graduated with B+ grade average and was able to move forward to West Virginia University. Through his time at school, he was able to have the opportunity to participate in fundraising for mission trips. Anthony Helton visited poverty-stricken areas both in the Dominican Republic and Philippines. Not only traveling to help with charity, but Anthony also worked within his community to help with providing the homeless with food as well as clean up and construction projects. Anthony was also a standout athlete and team captain for his Basketball team. This was vital in teaching Anthony what it is like to work as a team, which has shown in his success for his business.
During his early years, Anthony Helton grew up watching his father run small businesses. This was instrumental in leading him to decide that he wanted to start a company. Anthony knows what hard work is like as even in high school during his summer, he worked within the construction industry while also taking online college courses. Upon graduation, Anthony decided to become a full-time student. Being used to that busy lifestyle, while in university, he is starting his own trucking business. It was a goal that he has always had and is thankful for the opportunity to start this business now.
When Anthony is not working towards his degree or his business, he really enjoys staying active. Whether that means grabbing a basketball and heading out to the local court or going to the gym. It is very important that he manages his busy schedule and still makes time to step away and refresh.
How did you get started with Anthony Thomas Trucking LLC? What inspired you to start this business?
I have always had the drive to pursue my own business and was constantly doing research into which industry would continue to rise as well as gain my interest. After a lot of research ,I knew the trucking industry was for me.
How do you make money?
My company makes money by hauling materials for my clients via a tractor trailer. They can either be short hauls or long hauls, we offer all services.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
We are still working to the profitable state as we are just starting, however, we do see a rise coming in the next few months. It will be a very exciting day that we have worked very hard towards.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
I think every entrepreneur always has doubts, without those doubts, you cannot prepare for the speed bumps and there is no drive to work harder. I always continue to research the market and the trends within industry to make sure that I am on top and ready for it all, whether it be issues or new trailers. Owning a business will always be stressful, but as long as you are prepared, there is nothing that can stop you.
How did you get your first customer?
Through my research when I was starting the company, I visited different locations that I think would benefit from my company. I submitted all my proposals and paper work and continued to follow up and show my strengths which gained a contract. I maintain that communication and show my hard work to continue to have that contract.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
I know it may be old school, but as my business website is getting developed, I have been walking around to different potential clients to show what I can offer and setting their expectations. Word of mouth if an old strategy, but I believe very effective!
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
I think the toughest decision that I have had to make in the last few months is determining where my investments are best spent. I have saved a lot of money to start this business and ensuring that every purchase is worth the investment is always a tough decision. I am still in the beginning stages of the business so every decision I make right now is very important.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
I have the drive to make sure that I read my goals, I work very hard when issues arise to have them resolved as soon as possible. I have the passion to succeed as this has always been a long-term goal of mine and will make sure that I do everything in my power to show that.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
I think being able to say that I am a business owner is still one of the most satisfying things in my business. I got to hire my first employee and secure my first contract. These moments will always stay with me as it was where this all began.
What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?
Due to being at the early stages of the business, there is a whole world of growth for me to experience with my business. One thing I am most excited about is becoming profitable and hopefully seeing that growth within the year. I am excited to get more employees and attracting new contracts.
What business books have inspired you?
7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Convey. This book has everything from habits to challenges that can make you a more effective person. It really makes you self-aware as to how your actions can benefit or harm the outcome. I really recommend this to everyone.
What is a recent purchase you have made that’s helped with your business?
I am currently in the process of purchasing the correct equipment for my business. The most recent purchase was a tractor trailer. This is obviously a big investment but very vital to my success.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy working out and am very much a fitness enthusiast. I will spend any free time that I can find at the gym or outdoors. It really helps me clear my mind and focus on what’s most important. Although free-time is very rare in my current situation, it something that I will continue to make time for.
