How did you get started in this business? What inspired you to start this business?
I was inspired to start my business by studying web development. I realized there was a demand for high-quality web design in my area. I started receiving bigger contracts, which in turn, allowed my business to grow.
How do you make money?
I make money through client billings. My services are competitively priced, and I pride myself on the best results for each client I serve.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
It took a while to become profitable. As a consultant, I didn’t have much overhead to deal with, so that helped me hit the ground running. It still took almost a year to get into the black. There were some lean times right after I left my previous job to work full time as a freelancer.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
Yes, we all have our doubts from time to time. I went through a great deal of stress and anxiety when I first struck out on my own. When you are self-employed, you and only you are responsible for your success, and it can be a heavy burden.
How did you get your first customer?
I cold-called local companies with websites that were out of date or could use work. It was a bold move, but it gained me a few core clients. I still work with a few of them today, and I’m pleased to say I have helped them succeed.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works well to generate new business?
Social media is great for me. I have been impressed by the impact LinkedIn has had on my business. I’ve also had good luck getting business through word of mouth. When a satisfied customer talks about you, you’ve done something right.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
I had a contract that I had to let go. I just wasn’t seeing eye to eye with the client, and we agreed that it was time for them to move on. I had trouble dealing with this, but it’s true that you can’t always please everyone. You can only do your best.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
My intense drive and independence have brought about prosperity in my life. I am always pushing myself to learn more and be better. Since I’m independent, I can self-motivate.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Having great feedback from my first few clients was amazing. It was a great feeling to know that my skills were being put to good use.
What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?
I am considering hiring more people. The business is growing, and it’s become difficult to keep up with everything on my own. I’m excited by this prospect.
Which business books have inspired you?
I recently read The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. It was a fascinating take on why some startup companies fail while others succeed. I plan to adopt some of his recommendations in my own business.
What is a recent purchase you have made that’s helped with your business?
I recently bought a new set of monitors for my desk. The difference between my old monitor and the new ones is like night and day. I wish I’d upgraded my monitors sooner.
If you had the opportunity to meet any famous business person from the past or present, whom would you choose?
I have always been fascinated by the career of Richard Branson. He is a master of brand building. He built his company from nothing to a global giant. Also, I would like a ride on Virgin Galactic someday.
