Steven Nguyen, DDS, is an Arizona-based dentist. Dr. Nguyen attended Pennsylvania State University for his undergraduate degree and earned a Bachelor of Science. After realizing that he wanted to pursue dentistry, Dr. Steven Nguyen studied at the New York University Dental School, one of the most prestigious dentistry schools in the country. Finding a passion for dentistry and wanting to further improve his knowledge and education, he then attended the VA Manhattan Hospital General Practice Dentistry Residency, a very competitive program that offers advanced training and educational experiences for promising dentists.
Since 2005, Steven Nguyen, DDS, has been practicing dentistry in NYC and privately in Arizona, where he now resides with his wife and children. Very much a self-starter, Dr. Nguyen strives to provide high quality, efficient, and effective patient care at an affordable price. Recognizing that price is often an issue for many considering dental operations, he tries to make the service available to a wide percentage of the population. To keep his skills sharp, Dr. Nguyen has taken a number of advanced CE courses. How did you get started in this business? What inspired you to start this business?
I knew I wanted to be a dentist since first attending Pennsylvania State University and it wasn’t long after receiving my dentistry training that I thought it would be a good idea to start contracting out my services. It was this inclination that led to the start of DRN Dental, PLLC. Currently, I associate my services with Tru Value Dental in Mesa and Smiles By Delivery in Surprise.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
It really didn’t take long at all. There is always a need for dental services that are of high quality and affordable at the same time. I try not to think about profits, though. I try to focus on just doing right by people and keeping them smiling.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
I can’t say that I ever really doubted myself. I’ve always been confident in my skills, which I think is important, and the business just sort of followed. I suppose everyone has times where they feel doubtful, but it’s important to just have faith in yourself and your abilities.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
Social media has been a great development that helps me to generate business. It’s crazy how many eyes you can reach in a day just by putting yourself out there on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Old fashioned referrals are still a very strong source of business for me, though.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
My drive to help people is one of the main factors that contribute to my success. When you combine this with my dentistry expertise, that’s really a recipe for a successful practice.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
The moment that comes to mind occurred several years ago. A patient who was undergoing chemotherapy had severely crumbling teeth and I was able to remove the problem teeth and give her a set of dentures attached to implants that she was really happy with. Seeing a patient be able to smile and eat normally when they couldn’t before was a really great moment for me.
What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?
I’m really excited to see where my business ventures take me. I think there’s a great deal of potential for a dental service that offers high-quality dentistry at an affordable price.
What business books have inspired you?
“Start with Why” by Simon Sinek has been very inspirational. It basically stresses the importance of being very sure about why you’re starting a business and to let that “why” drive you to success. For me, the “why” is that I wanted to offer top-notch dental services to patients who may not be able to afford to attend more expensive dental practices.
What is a recent purchase you have made that’s helped with your business?
I honestly feel like I make purchases every day that help with my business. Whether it’s a new computer or piece of software, a new cell phone, or a piece of dental imaging equipment, I’m constantly trying to improve myself and my practice.
What is your main mission in life?
My main mission in life is to ensure that I keep my family and patients happy and healthy!
