What drew you to a career in the insurance and risk management industry?

My entry into insurance and risk management was serendipitous, but once I began, I realized how perfectly it aligned with my strengths. I love solving problems, building relationships, and creating stability in uncertain situations. This field lets me do all three while helping clients achieve their goals. Risk management is about more than just mitigating threats—it’s about empowering people to take calculated risks that lead to growth. That philosophy resonated with me early on and continues to fuel my passion for this work.

How did your upbringing in Houston shape your career and values?

Growing up in Houston with my siblings taught me resilience and the value of hard work. My parents instilled in us the belief that success comes from effort and integrity. Houston is a city of opportunity and diversity, and I think that exposure helped me develop an adaptable and open-minded perspective, which has been invaluable in my career. These values have shaped how I lead teams, interact with clients, and approach challenges.

As a mother of two sons, how has your family life influenced your leadership style?

Being a mom has been the most rewarding and enlightening role of my life. Garrett and Gregory have taught me patience, adaptability, and how to prioritize what truly matters. These lessons naturally translate to my leadership style. At work, I focus on fostering an environment where people feel supported, just as I do at home. I believe in nurturing growth, celebrating wins, and being a steady source of encouragement during challenges.

What lessons did you learn from running Elsey & Associates, and how do you apply them in your role at Marsh McLennan Agency?

At Elsey & Associates, I learned how to navigate the complexities of leadership—balancing big-picture strategy with day-to-day operations. Managing a company requires adaptability, especially in an industry as dynamic as insurance. One of the key takeaways was the importance of building trust, both within a team and with clients. At Marsh McLennan Agency, I apply those lessons by fostering collaboration and ensuring our clients receive solutions tailored to their unique needs.

What do you find most fulfilling about working in the construction and surety sectors?

Construction is such a foundational industry—it’s about creating structures that last generations. Being part of that process is incredibly rewarding. Surety, in particular, combines technical expertise with relationship-building, which I enjoy. It’s not just about providing a bond; it’s about understanding the client’s vision and helping them achieve it securely and efficiently. Knowing our work enables others to build their legacies is deeply fulfilling.

How has your passion for the outdoors influenced your approach to challenges, both personal and professional?

The outdoors is where I recharge and reflect. Hiking teaches you that progress often comes one step at a time, and that’s a lesson I carry into my personal and professional life. Whether I’m tackling a steep trail or addressing a complex business issue, I focus on steady, intentional progress. Nature reminds me to stay grounded and appreciate the journey, not just the destination.

What advice would you give to women entering male-dominated fields like construction and risk management?

Confidence and preparation are your best tools. Know your value, and don’t be afraid to speak up. I’ve learned that expertise and authenticity are powerful ways to build respect and credibility. Also, seek out mentors and allies who champion your growth. Surrounding yourself with supportive people can make all the difference.

How do you maintain a balance between your high-powered career and your personal life?

It’s not always easy, but I prioritize being present in whatever I’m doing. When I’m at work, I’m fully engaged with my team and clients. When I’m with my family or enjoying the outdoors, I give myself permission to disconnect from work. Balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about being intentional with your time and energy.

How has Tae Kwon-do shaped your mindset and approach to leadership?

Tae Kwon-do has taught me discipline, focus, and perseverance. It’s a sport that challenges you physically and mentally, which translates well to leadership. You learn to push through discomfort, think strategically, and remain composed under pressure. These lessons help me stay resilient and level-headed in my professional life.

What is the biggest challenge facing the insurance industry today, and how is Marsh McLennan Agency addressing it?

The biggest challenge is keeping up with the pace of change—whether it’s evolving risks, new regulations, or advancements in technology. At Marsh McLennan Agency, we stay ahead by investing in innovation and continuous learning. We’re leveraging data analytics and technology to provide more proactive, customized solutions for our clients. But we also remain grounded in the human element, building strong relationships and understanding our clients’ unique needs.

What drives your passion for mentoring the next generation of professionals?

I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors who shaped my career and helped me grow. Passing that on is a privilege. Mentorship isn’t just about sharing knowledge; it’s about inspiring confidence and helping people realize their potential. Seeing someone I’ve mentored succeed is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind, both personally and professionally?

Professionally, I want to be remembered as someone who led with integrity, built meaningful relationships, and made a positive impact on the industry. Personally, I hope my sons see me as someone who pursued her passions while always prioritizing family. If I can inspire others to embrace challenges, lead with purpose, and cherish life’s journey, then I’ve achieved what I set out to do.

What role does philanthropy play in your life, and why is it important to you?

Philanthropy is about giving back to the communities that have supported you. It’s a way to extend gratitude and create opportunities for others. Whether it’s supporting local causes or mentoring young professionals, I believe in contributing to something bigger than myself. It’s an integral part of who I am.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in a demanding industry?

I find motivation in the people I work with and the clients we serve. Knowing that our efforts help businesses thrive keeps me inspired. Outside of work, my family, nature, and Tae Kwon-do provide balance and perspective. Staying connected to what I love ensures I approach challenges with energy and optimism.

What advice would you give your younger self starting out in the insurance industry?

Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to take risks. Early in my career, I often felt the need to prove myself, but I’ve learned that confidence and authenticity are key. Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you, and remember that growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
