Thank you for speaking with us today, Moran. Could you share a bit about your journey into the world of interior design?
It’s a pleasure to be here! My passion for design started early. I’ve always been fascinated by how spaces can influence emotions and how design impacts the way we live. After completing my Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design at SCAD, I pursued a Master’s in Interior Architecture at Parsons School of Design. Working with top design firms in New York City early in my career honed my skills and gave me the confidence to launch Elkerif Designs in 2012. It’s been a rewarding journey ever since!
Elkerif Designs recently celebrated over 20 years in the industry. What would you say are the core principles that have driven your firm’s success?
Consistency and client focus have always been key for us. We’re committed to understanding our clients’ needs and translating their vision into beautifully functional spaces. Another important principle is adaptability; the design world evolves quickly, and staying flexible helps us incorporate new trends while maintaining timelessness. Lastly, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. We prioritize using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient designs that are both elegant and responsible.
Sustainability is a major focus for your firm. How do you incorporate eco-friendly practices into your projects?
Absolutely—it’s something I’m very passionate about. We consciously source sustainable materials, from reclaimed wood to low-VOC paints. Energy efficiency is also crucial, so we integrate LED lighting, smart home systems, and energy-efficient appliances whenever possible. The goal is to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also reduce the environmental impact. It’s about designing for the future without sacrificing aesthetics.
Your design style is often described as modern yet timeless. How do you strike that balance between contemporary trends and enduring design?
That’s a great question! My approach starts with clean lines, rich textures, and a focus on functionality. Trends are important, but they come and go. I believe in grounding each project with classic elements that stand the test of time while selectively incorporating modern touches. This way, the spaces we create feel fresh and current but don’t become dated as trends change.
Can you share an example of a challenging project you’ve worked on and how you overcome those challenges?
One of the most challenging projects was designing a high-end urban penthouse. The client wanted a luxurious, open space, but the building had structural constraints that limited what we could do. We had to get creative, working closely with engineers to modify layouts without compromising the integrity of the design. It was a great exercise in problem-solving, and the end result was a space that the client absolutely loved.
What advice would you give to young designers who are just starting out in the industry?
Start by building a strong foundation in design principles, but don’t be afraid to take creative risks. Gaining hands-on experience through internships and learning from seasoned professionals can be incredibly valuable. Also, network as much as possible and stay curious. The design industry is always evolving, so keep up with new materials, technologies, and trends. But most importantly, develop your unique style—stand out by being authentically you.
The past few years have seen a surge in digital transformation within interior design. How has technology impacted your approach to projects?
Technology has been a game-changer in many ways. It’s streamlined processes like 3D modeling, virtual reality walkthroughs, and client presentations. It allows clients to visualize spaces before they’re built, which helps with decision-making and reduces costly changes down the line. We’ve also embraced smart home technology, integrating automation systems for lighting, climate control, and security, making spaces not just beautiful but also highly functional and efficient.
You’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from boutique hotels to luxury residences. What’s your favorite type of project to work on, and why?
I truly enjoy the variety, but I’d say working on boutique hotels is especially exciting. There’s a unique challenge in designing spaces that need to feel both luxurious and inviting for guests while also being practical for everyday use. It’s rewarding to create environments where people can unwind and experience something memorable. Plus, hotel projects allow for more creativity with themes and design concepts, which I find incredibly inspiring.
What’s next for Elkerif Designs? Are there any exciting developments on the horizon?
We’re looking to expand our portfolio internationally, especially in the realm of sustainable commercial spaces. There’s a growing demand for eco-friendly design solutions worldwide, and we want to bring our expertise to new markets. Additionally, we’re exploring partnerships with sustainable product manufacturers to further integrate green solutions into our projects. It’s an exciting time, and I’m eager to see how we can continue to innovate.
Finally, when you’re not designing, how do you unwind and stay inspired?
Traveling is a big part of my life—it’s where I draw a lot of my inspiration. Exploring different cultures, visiting museums, and experiencing historical architecture gives me fresh ideas that I bring back to my work. I also enjoy spending time with family, horseback riding, and simply being in nature. These activities allow me to disconnect, recharge, and return to projects with renewed creativity and focus.
