How did you get started in this business?
I originally started my financial services career with a focus on investments. Soon I realized how confusing the Medicare process was for people over the age of 65 and I thought offering my services in healthcare was a great way to help people.
How do you make money?
I make money by helping people enroll in Medicare. I get paid by the insurance companies which is how I am able to offer a free service to my clients.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
Quite a while actually. It takes months for people to learn your name and how you can help them.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
Surprisingly no, I didn’t have much doubt. My business partner Tony had 8 years in the business when he brought me on so I put my trust in him.
How did you get your first customer?
It just so happened that a man down the street asked me what I did for a living, and he was also turning 65 at that time.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
Personalized mail. Every letter I mail out I do myself. I think nowadays it’s easy to tell if something is computer generated or sent in bulk.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
Finding the right accountant.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
Working Monday-Saturday. Just that one extra day makes a world of difference from a productivity standpoint.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Achieving MDRT status. Also, the preferred broker designations with top carriers in RI was an incredible feeling too.
What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?
Hopefully more of the same. I’m most excited about the new plans coming out in September. They get less expensive and add more benefits every year.
What business books have inspired you?
The essential advisor by Bill Crager and The intelligent investor by Benjamin Graham.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Take education much more seriously. I didn’t see the value of education until I got to.
Are you willing to be a mentor? If so, how should someone contact you?
Absolutely! I’d love the chance to help someone looking to get into the business. All of my contact information is on my website – https://www.matthewbussard.com/.
