Kendra, how has your upbringing in Overland Park influenced your career aspirations and hobbies?

Growing up in Overland Park with its abundant green spaces and a community-centric environment deeply influenced my love for nature and community service. This nurturing setting was key in shaping my career aspirations towards creative fields like Graphic Design. It also taught me a strong sense of community involvement, which I carry into every project, whether volunteering at animal shelters or participating in sorority activities at college.

What drew you to Graphic Design after initially considering Veterinary Medicine?

Initially, my love for animals made Veterinary Medicine a natural choice. However, I’ve always been drawn to creative expression, and Graphic Design offered a way to meld my artistic skills with practical application. The decision was made when I realized I could use my design skills to make a broader impact, potentially even within the veterinary field by improving educational or promotional materials.

Can you describe a particularly rewarding project or class from your Graphic Design studies?

One of the most rewarding projects was a photography assignment where we had to capture the essence of ‘motion’ without using traditional sports images. I chose to photograph animals in motion at a local shelter. This project was not only creatively fulfilling but also brought attention to the shelter, helping to promote pet adoption.

How have sports influenced your approach to both your studies and your creative projects?

Sports have taught me discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking—qualities that greatly enhance my academic and creative projects. In design, like in sports, you often have to think several steps ahead and be ready to change your strategy as the situation demands.

What challenges have you faced in your transition from high school sports to college life, and how have you addressed them?

Transitioning from being an athlete to focusing solely on academics and less physical activity was challenging. I’ve found new outlets in snowboarding and recreational activities like sand volleyball that keep me active and help manage stress.

With your extensive volunteer experience, how do you integrate your passion for service into your current studies and future career goals?

Volunteering has been integral to who I am, influencing my ethical approach to design. I aim to work on projects that promote social good, be it through environmentally sustainable practices in design or creating awareness campaigns for causes I care about.

As a kennel tech and later in various dining establishments, how have these experiences shaped your work ethic and design philosophy?

Working as a kennel tech and in fast-paced restaurant environments honed my ability to work under pressure and adapt quickly—skills that are incredibly beneficial in the design field, where client needs can change rapidly and deadlines are tight.

What advice would you give to someone looking to balance a demanding college schedule with personal hobbies and interests?

It’s all about prioritization and time management. Allocate time for studies, work, and hobbies, but also be flexible. Allow yourself the freedom to explore new interests, as these can lead to unexpected and fulfilling pathways.

Looking forward, how do you see your career unfolding, and what roles do you hope to take on within the fashion and magazine industry?

I see myself initially working in design departments, perhaps for fashion magazines, where I can contribute to everything from print layouts to digital presentations. Eventually, I’d love to lead projects or campaigns that align with my values and push the boundaries of traditional fashion media.

Finally, how do you stay inspired and motivated in both your academic and personal life?

I stay inspired by constantly seeking out new experiences, whether that’s through travel, exploring new art forms, or simply engaging with diverse groups of people. Keeping an open mind and staying curious has always driven my personal and academic growth.
