What does your typical day look like?
I work out in the morning after rising early. After a healthy breakfast, I head into the office. Throughout the day I am assisting patients with both consultations and follow-ups. After work, I’ll leave for home but I often have patient calls into the evening. I also take time at the end of the day to review work and emails. I like to finish the day with some reading for education and enjoyment.
What makes you a successful entrepreneur?
I focus on professional development. I read books in my field and I like to attend conferences usually around once a month. It’s my passion so it’s easy for me to get excited about learning. And from that, I’m able to provide top-level care to my patients.
How do you bring your ideas to life?
Since my work centers around helping people, the ability to achieve that focus naturally leads to me having more patients. People can tell when you care and when you’re working hard. If they see that, then they’ll refer people to see me and I can help even more patients.
Can you name one trend that excites you?
Genetic markers are a big one. The potential there is to offer care that is individual to your own predispositions. I’m also really excited by the potential of regenerative medicine. Stem cells have already shown they can do amazing things for our health so as time passes we will undoubtedly see even more benefits of that amazing subsection of medicine.
Where did the idea for the Healthy Aging Medical Centers come from?
Really from a deep fascination with nutrition and health. After beginning to practice medicine I saw how many really effective treatments were being ignored by doctors for a variety of reasons. I felt if we could bring these treatments to people and help them optimize their health, then it would be a positive thing I could do to make a difference in people’s lives.
How do you grow your business?
Quality of care and having a passion for helping others. People see that and they appreciate that you’re actually invested in their health outcomes. From there, they’ll refer new patients to me and I have the opportunity to help more people.
Dr. Dov, any advice that you would give your younger self?
Don’t blindly trust what others tell you. Believe in yourself and follow your own internal compass.
As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you recommend everyone else do?
Always engage in professional development. Read books, studies, articles, whatever. Just make sure you’re learning. That will come naturally if you’re passionate about what you do.
What is one failure you’ve had to overcome?
I often don’t think of obstacles as failures, more often I find them to be learning experiences. There have been times where I’ve felt stagnant in my career, but I was able to recognize that and focus on a new path.
What is one business idea you’d give away to our readers for free?
Health is an evergreen industry and there’s a serious lack of information about wellness optimization. Create something that informs people about that and you could have a good business on your hands.
What’s the best $100 you’ve spent lately?
I recently took a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. Sea breeze, friends, family. You can’t really beat that. Everyone needs to relax from time to time.
Dr. Dov Rand, what’s something you believe that is not widely accepted?
The importance of preventative medicine. There are many people who practice it but we could be doing so much more. When you optimize your lifestyle choices you optimize your health. It’s the key to a long and healthy life.
Can you recommend a good book?
“Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. It’s so inspiring and it really shows what we’re capable of as humans even in dire circumstances.
What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive?
Google Scholar. It’s a great resource for checking out the latest scientific findings in my field. I love reading studies and emerging research.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Success does not consist in never making mistakes, but in never making the same one a second time.” — George Bernard Shaw.
