Mark Martin is executive vice president of marketing and customer care manager for Nova Skin Sciences, one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of high-quality anti-aging skincare.
Mark is responsible for coordinating the innovations of Nova’s product team to the customer-focused marketing and communications divisions to build the Nova Skin Sciences global brand, create consumer awareness and advocacy for Allumière and Niuvella and drive consumer preference for the company’s various brands through all media channels.
As is executive vice president of marketing and customer care manager, Mark oversees the global management of the Nova Skin Sciences brand, including customer relations, digital marketing, creative development, marketing effectiveness, social media and employee communications.
How did you get started?
I knew early on in my career I wanted to work in and around science, even though I was neither a doctor, scientist or health major, but I loved marketing and sales and I wanted to be able to work in a professional environment where I can truly believe in the products and solutions we are offering.
What inspired you to start this business?
I am not the founder of Nova Skin Sciences, but I joined the company early on and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The company was founded with the goal of catering to those, who fail to consume proper nutrition day in and day out.
How do you make money?
We make money the new-fashioned way — online. As part of the launch of Allumière Antiaging Cream and Niuvella Antiaging Serum, through our Nova Skin Sciences division, we have a really incredible introductory offer we are bringing to market and we are sure this is going to be a great success.
How long did it take for you to become profitable?
Time will tell. Launching a new product is a big investment, but we really are confident Allumière Antiaging Cream and Niuvella Antiaging Serum will be breakthrough products in the anti-aging skincare space.
When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?
There is always a little bit of fear and doubt, but I think that is a good thing. It keeps you cautious and humble. Overconfidence is a dangerous thing!
How did you get your first customer?
Our first customer came directly from online marketing. We focus most of our advertising and marketing efforts on online channels.
What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?
Social marketing has been a huge driver of growth for our company. Friends like recommendations from friends and with Facebook and Instagram you can actually see the results – it’s undeniable and as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?
Probably the toughest decision I have had to make over the past few months is when to launch.
What do you think it is that makes you successful?
I think one of the secrets to my success is I am hyperorganized. It allows me to prioritize what needs to be done and when and while others waste inordinate amounts of time searching for a certain email or folder, I have everything chronological and alphabetical, which means I can find just about anything I want in under a minute. If you start adding up lost minutes searching for lost items, you can tack on a couple of weeks of productivity right there!
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
I am blessed to work with an amazing management team and an incredibly talented Research & Development team. Being able to work with people I like and respect is a dream come true.
What does the future hold for your business?
There have been tremendous advances in our understanding about health and nutrition over the past several years and I expect this trend to continue. Stem cell research, DNA mapping, synthetic cells, robotic surgery are just a few recent revolutions in the health and sciences fields. In our space, we will continue to pursue powerful, effective and affordable formulations to improve the lives of our customers.
What are you most excited about?
I am very excited about the launch of two new skincare products through our Nova Skin Sciences, Allumière Antiaging Cream and Niuvella Antiaging Serum. These new products are an affordable, yet effective alternative to expensive plastic surgery or in-patient cosmetic dermatological procedures – one of the women who recently tried the product described it as a facelift in a bottle.
