Jason Steiner started this business while he was a detective with a major law enforcement agency just north of Boston.  He knew that the security industry was very much like law enforcement.  With all of that training and experience he possessed, he knew he could put that to good use in the security field.  It was then that Hunter Protective Services was born.  From the beginning, Jason knew growing a business would not be easy.  Long hours, endless middle of the night phone calls were the norm for him.  Jason knew that to become successful he had to do what other people in the industry did not want to do: always be accessible to his customers and treat all of the employees with the utmost respect.  Jason is heard around the office on a daily basis saying, “family first”.  With these mottos, Hunter Protective Services began to grow.  Jason was then able to put a lot of his law enforcement experience into play in the security business.

Jason’s reputation in the security industry began to build.  He was then fielding calls from some of the major corporations in the Boston area and redesigning some of the deeply flawed security protocols they had in effect.  Jason is always committed to making every business, building, or campus he engages with as safe as they can be.   Jason’s security officer training program is second to none.  He makes sure that all the Hunter Protective Services clients are getting the best security officer they can get.

How did you get started in this business? What inspired you?

I got started in the security industry while enrolled in a criminal justice program in college.  I was employed by a trauma hospital in the security division.  There I learned the day-to-day operations of a busy security department.  I listened to and I watched everything that was going on.  Every shift that I worked.   I was inspired by all of the good that we were doing every day in the security department.  I knew that if I worked hard I would own a security company.

When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?

When I started out there were several times I doubted it would work.  One time in particular that I think of often was the time when Hunter Protective Services was growing so fast we could not keep up with the demand and some customers would go elsewhere.  My business partner Jamie and I came up with a better way to attract new talented recruits and get them trained and in the field.

How did you get your first customer?

Hunter Protective Services got our first customer when I overheard a concert promoter talking about getting a music star off of his private jet in Boston for a show.  He then began talking to the star and his company then hired us to do the executive protection for any famous artist that came to play in the Boston area.  At that point, we cultivated a great business relationship that we still have today.

What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?

One of the toughest decisions I have had to make in recent months was to let a long-time employee go.  For a company that holds loyalty as a core value, this was a particularly tough decision.  I recognized that my tough decision was a necessary move and it has helped me see that one negative person on your team can affect the way other loyal employees do their job.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

I think that my most satisfying moment in business thus far has been knowing that I am able to employ people who need a job.  Sometimes we get people that we hire that are so excited to work here that they have cried when they get the job offer.  To me, that is a great feeling knowing that I am able to help someone better their situation.

What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?

The future is very bright at Hunter Protective Services.  Our approach to growth is controlled as to not sacrifice the quality that we offer to our clients.  We are excited to now be large enough to go after larger accounts. Being a medium size company in the Boston security market allows us to bid on bigger accounts in Massachusetts.  We have worked hard to build not only a reputation that people respect but are also familiar with. That reputation is now helping us grow our company.

What is a recent purchase you have made that’s helped with your business?

A recent purchase we have made for the business is a time and attendance system which helps track employees’ hours and streamline that information into payroll.  It also lets Hunter Protective Services know when and where employees are.  Customers love the accountability of our officers.

What is the best thing about your current job?

The best thing about my current job is getting to help people.  Being in the security field, we come across a lot of people in need.  Mostly it is when people are at their worst.  They have been involved in something out of the ordinary and are looking for comfort and guidance.  I have learned to have a great deal of compassion for people in these situations.  At the end of the day, it gives me great pleasure to know that I was able to help another person out.
