How did you get started in this business?

After graduating from Michigan State University’s College of Law, I needed to focus on one sector.  As a young lawyer, I saw the importance of technology and knew it would be vital in playing a key role in our daily lives.  So, I made it my mission to stay abreast of the latest technologies; specifically, those affecting both business and legal industries.

What inspired you to start this business?

I was inspired to start this business because I love technology and could see it as an asset to my law practice. Focusing specifically on ecommerce and technology allows me to stay ahead. It allows me to help my clients in making vital decisions because I’m plugged into the network of technology makers.

How do you make money?

We offer a variety of options for our clients. Finding a package that fits your budget is our pleasure. We have flat rates, hourly rates, and alternative packaging. We make money by helping you make money.

How long did it take for you to become profitable?

In my case, I was lucky to have great partners. We started out profitable because we had a solid team, a great numbers guy, and we did our marketing correctly. Starting out profitable and growing that profit took a lot of time, energy, and investment.

When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?

I think everyone has a moment of doubt. Sure, I had a moment or two where I questioned myself. What did I do in that moment? I took stock, counting the things that went well. You hear successful people talk about gratitude, when you have a moment of doubt, or feel overwhelmed, take a breath and think gratitude.

How did you get your first customer?

Everyone should start with their inner network. Pitching yourself, your business, to friends and business associates is always the best first step. Not only does it provide you a bit of practice, but your inner circle is going to be your biggest support. They will share your pitch with their family and friends.

What is one marketing strategy that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?

Networking events are a great way to learn marketing strategies and meet others like you. However, the best marketing strategy is technology. There are many technology marketing strategies that allow you to target your specific segment audience.

We’ve done some paid advertising on social medial, but beyond anything tech related, old fashioned networking and word of mouth works very well.

What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?

Cash or Credit. All joking aside, financial decisions are some of the toughest decisions a business owner makes. Where to bank, how to store assets, and how to diversify. Financial decisions are some of the most important and most difficult. Always consult experts and never give control of your assets to anyone.

What do you think it is that makes you successful?

Confidence. I’m very confident in my ability to find answers and solutions. If I can’t, I’m confident that I can find the best experts and by surrounding myself with key players in every industry.

Staying ahead of the curve by keeping tabs on big industries is another way I stay ahead. I’m constantly learning and asking questions.  If you’re not following where the world is going, you’re going to have a tough time being successful.

What was your most satisfying moment in business?

The day we opened Kelly / Warner. There’s nothing more satisfying than realizing the goal of your dreams. Every successful person sets goals to realize dreams. The day Kelly / Warner became a goal realized was the most satisfying because a lot went into establishing my law firm Kelly / Warner.

What does the future hold for your business?

I’m looking more and more at cryptocurrency companies these days too.  I’ve long been interested in fintech and follow the news and updates every day. It’s an exciting time to see a new sector of business being born!

What are you most excited about?

I’m most excited to reach 2020 and look back on how much we’ve accomplished. Once you set a goal and realize it you want to continue that pattern.  My goals are stepping stones to a dream.  I’m most excited to see Kelly / Warner grow and expand into one the key online legal firms serving e-commerce, internet startups, developers, and designers.

What business books have inspired you?

Never Eat Alone is the most inspiring business book in my collection.  In fact, it’s a book I’ve read and re-read several times.  Not only is it inspiring, it’s written well.

What is a recent purchase you have made that’s helped with your business?

I have always been a firm believer in the saying “health is wealth”.  You can’t possibly aim to do well in your career if you’re fighting an uphill battle with health issues.   That’s why I think that the smart watch I bought is probably the best purchase I’ve made so far.  It helps me track my steps, heart rate, and tells me when I just need to get up and breath.
