Dr. Paul Guerrino grew up in Yonkers and, from a young age, worked in the family business–an ice cream store located a few miles away in Mount Vernon. There he learned essential skills for running a successful business, like giving excellent customer service and having strong discipline and work ethic under his belt. His role models were his father Joseph and uncle Rudy Guerrino who ran the business with those values always kept close to them.

Dr. Guerrino took his education to heart when he was in dental school at New York University and after completing graduate training in periodontal surgery and dental implants at Boston University. Naturally, Dr. Guerrino’s initial practice was located in Mount Vernon, NY, on the family firm’s original site.

Dr Paul Guerrino has always used great service principles, been dedicated to people, and had a strong work ethic. These qualities have helped him expand his original Mount Vernon office to include Scarsdale and Hartsdale, New York locations. Dr. Guerrino’s wife, Dr. Afshan Ahmed (New York University ’03), is now a partner at the Hartsdale office to complete the circle of family success. At the same time, his sister, Lora Guerrino (University of South Carolina 90), works as an associate dentist in Mt. Vernon.

How did you get started in this business?

I always had a dream of providing quality dental healthcare to the community. I earned my dental degree at New York University Dental School. Upon the completion of my dental degree, I relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. There I enrolled at Boston University to study periodontics. Later, I returned to New York University to study dental implants intensively and became a Dentist-Implantologist. Today, my interest and work in dental implant technology have gained me admission to New York University’s Implant Study Club.  I am an active member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American College of Oral Implantology. I have been a member of the American Dental Association (ADA) since opening my first Guerrino Dentistry & Associates office in the 1980s.

I have assembled a staff of general dentists and specialists who are experts in the areas of pediatric dentistry, endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and implants.

How do you make money?

I make a living through Guerrino Dentistry & Associates. My clinic provides Westchester County residents with a safe and bright smile, teeth whitening, Invisalign teeth straightening, porcelain veneers, and bonding for chipped or widely spaced teeth.  My passion is to provide quality dental care to Westchester County at affordable rates.

How long did it take for you to become profitable?

Guerrino Dentistry & Associates has been profitable since the first quarter when it started. I started my clinic on a small scale so my initial investment wasn’t huge and it quickly became profitable in a couple of months.

When you were starting out, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? If so, how did you handle that?

Setting up my own clinic was something I was really eager to do and I had planned it thoroughly so I had little to no doubts. I had a proper business plan and strategy for how I would scale it gradually and always had the final goal in my mind. The market analysis had very promising results so I was sure it would definitely work and people in the community would benefit from the services.

How did you get your first customer?

My very first customer was an emergency case from a car accident that occurred in the close vicinity of the clinic location. The patient was rushed to Guerrino Dentistry & Associates and I treated him with an emergency oral surgery.

What is one marketing strategy (other than referrals) that you’re using that works really well to generate new business?

Content Marketing and Google Ads both have played a significant role in creating a customer base for Guerrino Dentistry & Associates. We regularly post authentic and SEO-optimized articles about dentistry to educate people and improve our SEO ranking. Running Google Ads also helps us generate a substantial amount of quality traffic that converts.

What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?

In December 2021, I was offered a key position at The New York School for Medical & Dental Assistants and I had to choose between my passion for serving my community or going ahead with the offer and growing professionally. It was a hard decision but I chose to dedicate my time and services to the people I care about and refused to join as Associate Professor at The New York School for Medical & Dental Assistants.

What do you think it is that makes you successful?

My dedication to my job. I believe you can’t excel in any field without dedication. Many people plan to achieve big goals but they fail to dedicate their time and energies to following their dreams and that’s when they lag behind others. I have dedicated my life to bringing smiles to people’s faces.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Recently my son Dr. Joseph Guerrino who is a qualified dentist joined Guerrino Dentistry & Associates and it was such an amazing feeling to find my son beside me in serving the community. Being a father I can’t be happier and more proud of his achievements.

What does the future hold for your business? What are you most excited about?

I am committed to keeping up with the latest technological breakthroughs in the world of dental implantology. I have been involved with the American Dental Association (ADA) for more than two decades, but I plan to work with a number of organizations that specialize in Implantology in the future.

I am focused on maintaining membership in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American College of Oral Implantology. I am excited to exchange ideas with other certified Implantologists while helping to improve the overall standards of dental care.

What business books have inspired you?

Grow Your Practice Online by Adam Zilko. The book discusses how to grow your dental practice online. The reader can learn proven strategies to attract and convert new dental patients and it is an ultimate guide to digital marketing for your dental practice.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Hard work is the key to success. You might come across people who are intelligent and blessed in one way or another but eventually, hard work takes the lead in practical life. One can craft one’s destiny by working hard with total dedication towards the goal.

Are you willing to be a mentor? If so, how should someone contact you?

I am always open to mentoring young dentists and they can reach me through my official website.
